Kolkata, India, July 4, 2023 - Cops have busted a fake call centre operating from Elliot Road adjoining Park Street in the wee hours of Monday. The call centre - a highly organized one - used to target Australians using multiple pretexts - offering discounts on OTT platforms, giving tech support or solving issues related to internet speed or software problems.
"Forty people - seven of them women - have been arrested and 30 others - who had joined in the past 10 days - were let off. A key accused was also let off as she is pregnant," said an officer. Those who have been working for months were picked up since "they would be in a reasonable position to know that fraud was getting committed".
Joint CP (crime) Shankha Shubra Chakrabarty stated that the two key operatives - Mohd sakir and Sayantan Das - have been nabbed.
