News : Last Call: Convergys Employees Prepare for Final Day
New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada, Aug 27, 2015 -- Raymond Wiseman didn’t particularly enjoy his job at Convergys for the last five years, but he was certainly grateful for it.
Wiseman said he had been looking for a while before landing a job at the call centre so was very happy to have the steady pay and benefits.
"It’s hard to run a household and have any kind of a living on a part time or casual income."
So it’s with mixed feelings that he enters his last day of work tomorrow.
"I’m not really happy with the company but it is a job and probably one of the better paying jobs in the county."
Wiseman said they are down to about 60 people on the phone not including the managers that are left. Those who were able to find jobs have left. Those that remain either weren’t able to find work or are hoping to be able to return to school.
For his own part he’d like to go back to school and study electronics and computing, but is still waiting to see if he’ll be approved through Employment Insurance benefits for that.
Convergys came to Nova Scotia in the late 1990s enticed by a payroll rebate program. With the closure of New Glasgow’s location the Cape Breton location is the only one still operating here.
Wiseman believes the spinoffs, particularly around the Aberdeen Shopping Centre where the employees would line up at Sobeys for lunch and shop, will be missed.
When it comes to call centres, Pictou County Chamber of Commerce executive director Jack Kyte says the New Glasgow’s Convergys has actually been relatively long lived.
"These call centres seem to come and go and it’s the way system seems to work," Kyte said. "When a community lands one of these call centres you have to keep your eyes open and realize it’s not going to be forever. Convergys was here so long we expected it to always be here. That’s why it came as such a shock."
Kyte said there were many benefits that Convergys brought to the area from the economics to the experience employees were able to gain.
"It was a place for them to get started, to get experience," he said. "Many moved on to other jobs in the county and beyond…. These days it’s so hard to get a start. In that sense it was very good."
