News : Lifeline Appeals to Jagger
July 29, 2014 -- After losing three friends to suicide, Derek and Debra Best are determined to raise $300,000 for Lifeline WA.
As part of their Let’s Talk About Suicide Tour, Mr and Mrs Best are organising a Guinness World Record attempt for the largest horse parade in the City of Perth.
They are also trying to make contact with rock legend Mick Jagger before his Perth Rolling Stones concert later this year.
The band cancelled their concert in March after Jagger’s long-term partner L’Wren Scott committed suicide.
"Ideally we would like, in one part of his concert, for the statistics to come up and for him to promote Lifeline," Mr Best said.
"I think it would work in with his performance. Anything with Mick Jagger on board would be fantastic."
Mr Best said he was shocked when he heard how many calls were going unanswered.
"People are screaming for help," Mr Best said. We want to raise $300,000 to train 100 people to take crisis calls at Lifeline."
Lifeline WA chief executive Fiona Kalaf said the WA organisation was facing a shortage in the number of crisis supporters available to fill the peak period shifts for the 13 11 14 crisis line.
"Friday to Sunday is Lifeline WA’s busiest period for taking calls and sadly it is during this time that there is the least availability of educated volunteers to answer these calls," Ms Kalaf said.
She said it was critical that in their hour of need, people have somewhere to turn to.
"Lifeline WA is working very hard to increase the number of calls answered at its Perth-based contact centre, with demand for the service growing year-on-year," Ms Kalaf said.
"It is inspiring to have someone as enthusiastic as Derek dedicated to fundraising for Lifeline WA and breaking down the stigma surrounding suicide that limits so many people from seeking help.
"Lifeline WA is looking forward to assisting Derek and his team to achieve their Guinness World Record of holding the largest horse parade in the City of Perth.
"It is a very exciting initiative and one that Lifeline WA is proud to be a part of," Ms Kalaf said.
