News : Local Call Center with Over 100 Workers to Close
Pensacola, Feb 6, 2014 -- A call center that employs more than 100 people in downtown Pensacola is set to shut down soon.
Synergy Solutions is an Arizona-based company that provides call center services to several businesses. Not all of the workers will lose their jobs but the closure is still expected to have a substantial impact.
Synergy opened its office on Gregory Street back in 2008. They now say it will shut down at the end of next month.
Synergy executives aren't saying why the call center is closing other than that it's a business decision and that they aren't renewing their lease. They're also not saying how many employees will wind up losing their jobs. Some will be relocated or possibly hired by Synergy's clients - companies in retail, health care and financial services.
"We don't like to lose any employer, but there are opportunities," said Kathy Karshna, the assistant director of Workforce Escarosa, which offers a number of free services for the unemployed.
Karshna says she's cautiously optimistic about the job market in our area.
"Fortunately, Pensacola is a hub for call centers so that's the good news," Karshna said, "We have Navy Federal that's going to be hiring literally thousands over the next few years. We just had West out here recruiting."
Restaurants nearby say Synergy's presence, and hungry employees, will be missed.
"Anytime you lose business in Pensacola, it impacts the whole community," said Carl Broussard, the owner of Cajun Specialty Meats, "With it being right across the street, it's naturally gonna have an impact on us."
"Our unemployment rate is going down right now but we are here to help them if they need assistance," Karshna said.
Synergy is planning to hold a job fair later this month for employees who are getting laid off.
