News : Long Future for Qantas Call Centre in Tasmania
Tasmania, Australia, Jan. 21, 2015 -- The Qantas call centre in the state's south yesterday celebrated its 15th year operating in Tasmania.
The state government last year provided an incentive package to the airline provider to keep its call centre operations in Glenorchy. Most of the incentive was in the form of payroll tax relief.
The agreement saw the company consolidate its Australian contact centres in Tasmania, securing 246 local jobs.
The deal was signed for 10 years, but Premier Will Hodgman said he was confident the company had a long future in the state.
"It is also important to note the new workers who have joined the ranks since Qantas reaffirmed its commitment to Tasmania, with 60 new recruits recently joining the workforce," Mr Hodgman said.
"We also welcome an initial 11 workers who are relocating to Hobart from interstate, and look forward to welcoming more as the Melbourne and Brisbane call centres wind down over the next 18-months," he said.
"Without the government stepping in, those jobs simply would have disappeared".
