News : MA Unemployment Call Center in Springfield to Close
Springfield, MA, USA, March 31, 2016 -- A Springfield call center that aids with the state's unemployment claims is set to close.
Robert Cunningham, the Director the MA Department of Unemployment Assistance said that workers at the center on Industry Avenue were told Thursday morning that the center will close on May 31.
Cunningham explained that call center employees are paid with federal funds and because the state's unemployment rate is low, so too is the funding and the number of people needing the center's services.
Upon the center's closure, calls from those needing assistance will be routed to one of the other remaining call centers in the Commonwealth.
There are 57 employees at the Springfield call center. They are being offered either a voluntary layoff or a voluntary retirement.
Cunningham noted that the unemployment office on Industry Avenue - where hearings are held - is a separate operation from the call center and will remain open.
