News : Mandurah Police Ask Public Not to Call Station
Mandurah, Australia, Sept 19, 2016 -- Police are reminding people to avoid calling Mandurah Police Station to report offences or seek police attendance.
The appropriate numbers to call are 131 444 to get police assistance in a non-emergency and 000 in an emergency.
Mandurah officer in charge Stephen Thompson said he had received feedback from the community that there had been delays in getting through to the station phone number.
"This appears to be due to an increase in calls being made to the station to report offences or seek police attendance," he said.
"Many people seem to have the impression that offences must be reported to the local station or this will result in a quicker police response. This is not correct."
Sgt Thompson said it was only appropriate to call the station if people would like to speak to a specific officer.
"People want to speak to their local police and I admire that," he said.
"But if you need police, calling the 131 444 number is the quickest way to get a response."
He said calling the 131 444 number allowed police to be on the streets, instead of staffing phones.
"Officers are taking phone messages constantly and taking calls that could go to the call centre," he said.
"The advantage of the call centre is that it frees officers up to get on to the road to deal with the calls rather than taking the calls."
Sgt Thompson also encouraged people to call their local police team to report ongoing issues in their suburb.
People can also report crimes at the WA Police website .
