News : Margao Sets Up Toll-free Number for Citizens’Complaints
Margao, Goa, India, Jan 8, 2015 -- Margao municipal council (MMC) has set up a call centre with a dedicated toll-free number in an effort to enable people to lodge complaints with the civic body.
MMC's chief officer, Naveen S L, told TOI that the toll-free number will be effective from Thursday.
"Anybody can call on this number and their issues will be logged and action taken immediately. The facility is designed to serve as a platform for citizens to register their complaints with the municipality, as each and every issue will be logged by the system. This will ensure that the response to the complaints will improve and so will the response time," said Naveen. Complaints with regards to garbage, licence status, tax issues, etc can be lodged on the toll-free number.
What's significant is that the software for this telephonic complaint system has been written by Naveen, who is a computer science engineer. On Wednesday, he held a meeting with MMC personnel who will man the call centre and explained to them the procedural requirements of attending to the tele-complaints.
While the toll free number will currently function during office working hours, MMC plans to extend the facility to 24x7 within a month, "after getting the council's nod and the requisite manpower", the IAS officer said.
Reviving the computerized technical file management system is also on the cards, and the system is likely to kick to life within one week, he added. This will help track the movement of files pertaining to construction licences, renewals, etc, and the status will be made public.
Applicants will also receive SMS alerts on their cellphones.
Though the system was designed and set up in the MMC years ago, it was never put to use, sources told TOI.
