News : Mental Health Crisis Helpline: A Lifeline for Those in Need

London, UK, Feb 23, 2024 - As Helpline Awareness Day approaches on Friday, February 23rd, Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, in collaboration with Surrey County Council, is shining a spotlight on a vital resource that has been supporting individuals in crisis for over a decade.

The Mental Health Crisis Helpline, operated by Surrey and Borders Partnership, stands as a beacon of support, offering assistance to nearly 50,000 individuals annually. Since its inception in 2010, this 24-hour NHS helpline has been a lifeline for approximately 600,000 people in their moments of need.

Available round-the-clock, 365 days a year, the helpline is staffed by trained professionals who provide a listening ear, offer valuable advice, extend support, and guide individuals to a diverse range of community services.

Recognizing that a mental health crisis can manifest in various forms, from extreme anxiety and suicidal ideation to episodes of mania or psychosis, the helpline ensures that help is readily accessible to those experiencing distress or feeling overwhelmed.

In addition to the Mental Health Crisis Helpline, Surrey and Borders Partnership operates five Safe Havens across the region, located in Aldershot, Epsom, Guildford, Redhill, and Woking. These havens offer out-of-hours assistance and support to adults navigating mental health crises or emotional distress. Each Safe Haven is staffed by a mental health practitioner and two trained workers, providing a safe space for individuals to seek solace and support during challenging times.

Mark Nuti, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, emphasized the importance of breaking the silence surrounding mental health and ensuring that support is accessible to all. "We believe that mental health support should be available to everyone," said Nuti. "No one should have to suffer in silence – the Mental Health Crisis Helpline is here for anyone who needs it."

Echoing Nuti’s sentiments, Emily Hackett, Mental Health Crisis Line Service Manager, encouraged individuals in crisis or those concerned about loved ones to reach out for assistance. "Our dedicated crisis call handlers are on hand to support you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week," affirmed Hackett.

Amidst the challenges of mental health, the availability of resources like the Mental Health Crisis Helpline serves as a crucial lifeline, offering hope, compassion, and support to those in their darkest moments.
