News : Minacs Call Centre Shutting Down in Fredericton
Fredericton, NB, Canada Nov 27, 2015 -- Another Minacs call centre is closing in New Brunswick.
Employees at the Fredericton call centre were told the operation will be closing Jan. 29.
Shawn MacLean, a company spokesperson, says the 82 employees were notified on Wednesday of the impending closure.
MacLean says they have been offered equivalent jobs in Dartmouth, or they can apply for jobs in Moncton, where he says they would be given preference, but not guaranteed positions.
MacLean says the company has lived up to its end of the bargain after receiving wage subsidies from the province.
In a statement, Opportunities NB Chief Executive Officer Stephen Lund said the support provided to Minacs' Fredericton office by ONB was restricted to a payroll rebate.
"The payroll rebate is a low risk incentive only paid out after the job has been created and taxes have been collected," stated Lund.
"Although we were disappointed to hear of the closure, we will continue to work with the company to help it grow its Riverview, N.B. facility."
Friday is the last day on the job for 50 remaining workers at the Minacs call centre in Bathurst. The provincial government invested $1.2 million in payroll rebates and $300,000 in capital expenditures to assist Minacs in establishing the Bathurst call centre in November, 2011. The centre was expected to create 200 full-time positions.
