News : Moneague College Offering Training in Call-centre Operations
St Ann, Sept 17, 2014 -- Faced with reduced enrollment, Moneague College in St Ann has broadened its curriculum to include training in call centre operations, with the likelihood of job placement immediately upon completion.
Principal of the college, Howard Isaacs, told The Gleaner that with a fall in enrolment numbers in the traditional subject areas, coupled with the increase in jobs in the call centre sector, the college has been forced to move with the times.
"There is a demand for it, and so we have to cater to that demand, we have to respond to changes that are taking place in Jamaica," explained Isaacs. He said Moneague College is working with an overseas partner for certification.
The call centre business has been growing in Jamaica. There are more than 14,000 people employed in the information and communication technology/business processing outsourcing (ICT/BPO) sector, with JAMPRO seeking to create an additional 15,000 jobs over the next five years.
In August, The Gleaner reported that a proposal has been placed on the table by overseas investors for investment in the ICT business, who are seeking to construct 120,000 square feet of office space in Naggo Head, St Catherine. When completed, the facility will employ 4,000 people.
"There is a demand, so at the end of the course, jobs are almost guaranteed," Isaacs pointed out.
Moneague, a multidisciplinary institution offers degree, associate degree, diploma and certificate courses spread across fields such as education, business, management, hospitality and other areas. The college also offers Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations and Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate Examinations classes and short courses.
