Kitwe, Zambia, Oct 15, 2014 -- Mopani Copper Mines Plc says it has put up a host of measures to enhance Emergency Response Preparedness across its mining operations.
Mopani Copper Mines chief executive officer, Danny Callow, stated yesterday that setting up the Emergency Call Centre facilities at both Nkana and Mufulira sites to facilitate rapid communication of emergencies, providing adequate training of personnel in paramedics and first aid skills and procuring specialised equipment to handle different types of emergencies were among the measures put in place to enhance mine operation.
Callow also disclosed that Mopani was currently focusing on strengthening three major areas of the ERP-fire service, proto teams and medical emergency response.
"In line with the three emergency aspects, employees will be extensively trained in paramedics and first aid skills. Proto teams will also be enhanced and appropriately equipped.
Mopani will acquire suitable and corresponding equipment in order to develop capacity to deal with any kind of emergency that may occur at our operations," Callow stated in a press release issued yesterday.
He further stated that the measures were part of the safe mining campaign which sought to promote safe mining practices among all employees.
Callow stated that the measures would also be used to identify and control fatal hazards, and develop a strong safety culture among the workforce.
"The idea is to have a centralised system in place which will receive, handle and forward any emergency to the appropriate respondents in a timely manner. There is need to ensure that in case of any emergency, the cases are handled appropriately and efficiently. The two centres will, therefore, operate 24 hours daily to respond to any emergencies that may occur," Callow stated.

He stated that other than the planned training of personnel in paramedics and first aid skills, Mopani was in consultation with ER24 - an Emergency Response company from South Africa - to supply the mine with high-tech Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ambulances, two of which were already on site to test their efficiency and effectiveness.
"ER24 from South Africa are already on Mopani premises with their initial highly-qualified staff and two technologically-advanced ICU ambulances. This is part of our plan to roll out our Medical Emergency Response," stated Callow.
