News : MTN Staff Back at Work
Johannesburg, South Africa, July 20, 2015 -- Employees, who are members of the Communications Workers' Union at MTN, are expected to resume work on Monday.
This is after a two-month strike. The union reached an agreement with management of the mobile telecommunications firm last week.
The agreement will see permanent contracts and other benefits for workers. Earlier, the union said it was confident that jobs of employees were safe.
It says MTN management had given the assurance that there will be no job cuts following the strike.
More than 2 000 MTN workers affiliated to the Communications Workers Union downed tools over a wage dispute.
The two parties could not come to an agreement. But the newly-appointed CEO Mteto Nyati, who replaced Ahmed Farouk, resolved the dispute within days after taking office.
MTN workers will receive a 12 % bonus payment and some of the casual workers will be absorbed as permanent employees.
