News : NAACP Houston to Open Disaster Support Command Center
Houston, TX, USA Sept, 2017 -- The NAACP has announced that it has opened a disaster relief call center in Houston to assist those affected by Hurricane Harvey. The Texas NAACP Disaster Support Command Center (DSCC) will primarily serve as a station to field requests for service, and resource matching for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
"Our Texas State Conference has been working tirelessly to provide support to the victims of Harvey since the hurricane made landfall, and the DSCC is a culmination of all those efforts," said Derrick Johnson, interim president and CEO, NAACP. "Rebuilding the devastated areas and restoring hope and resolve to those most affected will take an all hands on-deck approach, but the NAACP will be present to ensure that the frontline communities and communities of color will have access to the resources and support they need in order to heal."

While aiding residents of the local communities find assistance and services, the DSCC will also train others in affected areas on how to create satellite operations and Disaster Recovery Centers. One of the DSCC’s goals is to start a dialogue on how the federal, state and local governments can develop better public policy during the recovery phase of the Stafford Act, a law designed to bring an organized and systemic method of federal natural disaster relief for state and local governments.
The DSCC will be housed by the Houston Branch of the NAACP, and will be staffed for 180 days. Operating in compliance with FEMA rules, the DSCC’s services will include:
Identifying all resources and needs
Matching needs with resources
Coordinating direct relief efforts
Facilitating inter-agency communication and coordination
Coordinating job counseling and employment assistance
Coordinating and tracking case management, housing and legal services
Implementing technological systems to track problems and solutions
Coordinating linkage of all NAACP resources to ensure direct communication with all NAACP Units
Coordinate NAACP DSCC with federally designated Disaster Recovery Centers
Collaboration with state and national leadership to ensure sustainable and culturally competent partner engagement with state and federal agencies to include, but not limited to American Red Cross, FEMA, TAREB
Implement state and nationwide DSCC training programs
