News : Navajo Nation to Improve 911 Services
Albuquerque, August 11, 2014 -- The president of the Navajo Nation is promising its residents much needed access to 911 services.
President Ben Shelly has issued an executive order creating the backbone for enhanced 911 services throughout the Navajo Nation.
More than 175,000 people live on the reservation, but 60 percent lack landlines.
Navajo Nation officials say the biggest stumbling block for the initiative has been that there is no call center in the tribe that answers 911 calls.
Officials say now each area will create those facilities for their residents. The hope is to have service available for all areas on the Navajo Nation by September.
