News : Navi Mumbai Civic Body Dials 3,000 Recovered Covid Patients Daily

Mumbai, India, Oct, 2020 -- Navi Mumbai civic body and hospitals battling coronavirus have now turned their attention to post-Covid complications too. A Navi Mumbai Muncipal Corporation (NMMC) Covid call centre has been tracking recovered patients by dialling between 3,000 and 4,000 of them daily to find if they have any post-Covid complications to report. Other than the call centre, NMMC has set up a post-Covid OPD (outpatient department) at its Nerul hospital as well.

NMMC commissioner Abhijit Bangar told TOI: "Serious complications include secondary infections and lung issues. If there is a bacterial infection, then it can turn very serious. We have seen a case where a recovered woman died of secondary infection. Throughout her isolation period, she did not have any symptoms. After going home, though, she had a bacterial infection and was re-admitted to the hospital. The lady could not recover from the infection. Therefore, we decided to follow up with other patients."

Post-Covid complications can range from general weakness and fever to bacterial infection and stroke, among others.

Bangar said, "Our post-Covid OPD is yet to operate in a full-fledged manner due to shortage of staff, including counselling experts. Staffers at our call centre, though, dial recovered Covid patients daily. Every single patient is called at least once every three to four days. During the calls, if we find them developing serious complications, they are referred to hospitals."

Private hospitals, too, are treating post-Covid patients.

Dr Farah Ingale, consultant, internal medicine, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, said: "Patients could possibly develop complications later. Complications could range from stroke, myocarditis, secondary bacterial complications and so on. We have been asking our patients to do a follow-up. We advise a CT scan after three months to check for any permanent lung damage, irrespective of complaints."

Doctors at Apollo Hospital have seen close to 200 patients with post-Covid complications.

Dr T K Jayalakshmi, consultant pulmonologist at Apollo Hospital, said: "Post Covid, patients can get lung complications, weakness, persistent feverish sensation and postural hypotension, among other complications."
