News : New 181 Helpline Aims to Make Women Fearless
Ahmedabad, Feb 5, 2014 -- After 108, the state government and GVK EMRI have launched 181 - the Abhyam Women Helpline for all women in Gujarat. The helpline, launched in collaboration with the home and women and child welfare departments, will be synchronized with the existing "1091 - Gujarat Police Helpline" and other women-oriented services.
The free 24x7 helpline, 181, is a toll-free number to support women in distress and is accessible through any mobile or landline. Any woman can access the 181 Abhyam helpline for counselling, guidance, information and also for rescue from various threatening situations including domestic violence.
Initially, services will be available in Ahmedabad city, Surat city and Gandhinagar district. The helpline aims to provide 24X7 free counseling, guidance and information through a centralized response centre. The helpline also aims to effect rescues in situations like domestic or other violence to and shift vulnerable women to safe places.
"Services provided through 181 will include rescue from domestic violence to shift women to safe places, important information will be provided like on local government services, women's police stations, free legal services and counselling centres, NGOs and rescue officers. If a women is threatened or facing violence she will be transferred to the nearest safe place for which she can call at any time".
Teenagers older than 14 years, and all women in general can call the helpline. Information given at the time of call will be kept secret. Women facing violence - physical, sexual, mental, financial, at work place and those facing problems in marital relationships will be helped.
"Matters related to child birth, legal first-hand information, as well as matters related to finances and professions can be discussed over 181", said officials.
