News : New Call Center in Henrico Will Create about 500 Jobs
April 17, 2014 -- A company that provides outsourced customer service for global clients is planning to open a call center in Henrico County that will create about 500 jobs over the next two years.
Teleperformance, which is based in France, is opening a customer service center in 50,000 square feet of office space at 2805 N. Parham Road, said Gary McLaren, executive director of the Henrico County Economic Development Authority.
The company expects to start operations soon and will do most of its hiring for the 500 jobs within the first year, McLaren said. Employment at the center could eventually reach 700, he said.
The company provides technical support, customer service and acquisition, and debt collection programs for its client businesses. The new call center will primarily serve one large client, but he declined to identify the company.
"From a jobs perspective, this is one of the larger announcements we have had" in Henrico, McLaren said.
"A lot of times you have college students who are looking for these types of jobs. It is a nice segment of the job market to be able to offer to people who are looking for that kind of work," he said.
"We are ecstatic about it," he said. "We have been working on it for a while."
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership said the company will pay an average of $16 per hour, which is higher than the national average of $15.15 per hour and the Virginia average of $14.83, based on weighted averages for common call-center jobs.
Common call-center jobs include customer service representatives, receptionists and information clerks, and switchboard operators.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s office announced that the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity will provide funding and services to support the company’s training needs.
Teleperformance is the second international company to announce an investment in the Richmond area this week.
On Monday, the Greater Richmond Partnership, a regional economic development group, said that China-based InnoSound Technologies has signed a lease to occupy a laboratory and office space in the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park in downtown Richmond.
The company, which manufactures and distributes ultrasonic surgical equipment, plans to invest and employ about 25 people in its local operations within the next two years.
