Mumbai, India, Aug, 2017 -- In emergencies, commuters will now be able to speak directly with government railway police personnel posted on railway platforms.
There is good news for local train commuters. Soon, in an emergency, commuters will able to speak with government railway police (GRP) personnel posted on railway platforms through a special helpline, 1512, to be launched in 15 days.
"For a quick response to needy passengers in case of emergency, we decided to launch a new helpline. Trials are going on, and we hope that in the next 15 days, we will able to launch the new helpline for commuters," said GRP commissioner Niket Kaushik. "Our aim is to provide help to needy commuters in emergency situations within five minutes."
Currently, in case of emergencies, if any passengers call the existing helpline, the control room attends to the call, get details, and informs the nearest police station or chowky, which in turn alerts on-duty staff. Sometimes, by the time the staff reaches the next station, the train has left.
In the new system, the control room will directly connect the onduty staff at the nearest location to the affected commuter.
When asked how the control room will locate on-duty staff, a senior GRP officer said: "With the help of a specially designed software, we locate our ground staff through GPS. When anyone calls the helpline, his or her position will be displayed on monitors. The moment the caller reveals her location, the control room staff will connect her to the nearest on-duty officer via conference call. When both are connected, the control room connection will be automatically disconnected."
For example, if someone reports a crime on a train that has just left Panvel station, she will be connected to GRP personnel at the next stop. The moment the train reaches that station, the caller will find the police waiting outside the compartment.
