Teesside, England, March 25, 2020 -- Teesside could be set for a jobs boost with Virgin Media saying it will create more than 500 posts in contact centres in response to the coronavirus crisis.
The company said it was receiving high numbers of calls from customers and was drafting in extra resources to help deal with queries.
New jobs are being created at a site on Teesside as well as offices in Birmingham, Sheffield and Manchester on both a permanent and fixed-term basis.
Virgin Media currently has a call centre on the Preston Farm Industrial Estate in Stockton.
Virus quarantine measures have meant some Virgin Media call centres have had to close so the operator said it was prioritising calls from vulnerable customers and asking people only to call if they have an urgent query that cannot wait.
Steps are being taken to fast-track the application and assessment process by using video interviews, allowing staff to start within weeks.
Abby Thomas of Virgin Media said: "We're working day and night to keep the country connected and make sure services are running smoothly.
"In these difficult times, we're really proud to soon be welcoming hundreds of new staff to our contact centres who will help us continue to serve our customers."
The company says it is allowing remote working where possible, is ensuring strict social distancing and hygiene measures are in place for sites that need to remain open, and is giving up to two weeks' paid leave for staff who have to look after their children while schools are closed.
Virgin Media added it will continue to monitor the situation and create more jobs in the coming weeks if necessary.
