News : New Power Helpline Gets 200 Calls Within 2 Days
New Delhi, May 7, 2014 -- As the power demand goes up, complaints of unscheduled outages and multiple interruptions are coming in from across the city. Residents complain that the initiative started earlier this year for information on scheduled power cuts has fizzled out and they are facing outages throughout the day. The new helpline by the power department has received 201 complaints, mostly about supply, within two days.
Around 3pm on Tuesday, the peak demand crossed 4,500MW. The discoms expect the demand to climb in the days to come-a peak of 6,100MW is expected in early June. Complaints have poured in from IP Extension, Mayur Vihar, Sarita Vihar, Dwarka and Kalkaji.
"I stay in Patparganj where power cuts have been rare over the past few years. However, in the past few weeks, power cuts ranging from one to five hours have become common. The cuts are usually blamed on shutdowns for maintenance, but how often do the discoms need to carry out maintenance? This is poor management and the discoms should at least inform the RWAs in case of long shutdowns" said a Patparganj resident.
The new helpline, which opened on May 4, has got 113 complaints related to BSES Rajdhani, 72 for BSES Yamuna and 14 for Tata Power. Officials said that in over 60% cases, feedback was sought from the callers to ascertain if the complaint was resolved. "The summer helpline has been started by the power department to help citizens in resolving complaints about power failure and load shedding. The helpline functions round the clock. This is an alternative to the discoms' facilities," said an official.
If the grievance or complaint of the consumer is not resolved satisfactorily, they can lodge their complaints at the helpline number.
Ankur Garg, additional secretary (power), said the government has been trying to ensure efficient services. "This will also help the government monitor the discoms' performance,'' he said. This is a backup mechanism and people should first inform their discom. Only if the grievances are not resolved, they should approach the power department helpline with the discom's complaint number.
