News : New Training Program Hopes to Retain More Anderson Co. Dispatchers
Anderson Co., SC, USA, July 9, 2018 -- Historically Anderson County call center has had roughly ten dispatch openings at all times. But with the help of employees from other county agencies, the public shouldn't notice the difference, but now they are working on a new more permanent solution as the openings have increased to 14.
Recently County Council approved a pay increase for all dispatchers not just as a recruiting tactic, but for retention. Officials tell 7News that many dispatchers only stay in this career for two to four years before moving to another first responder career for more money.
Administration also hopes to work on scheduling where they would have more dispatchers in house during peak hours of calls and less on the off times.
But the major change has come in how they are training the new dispatchers as they come in the door.
"It could be four to six months down the road before you even knew if the candidates would make it as a dispatcher and now they have some programs in place that they can kind of put them in the hot seat on a training atmosphere right off the top of the program," said Ray Graham, Anderson County Council.
Dispatch has recently tested out this new training method with eight new recruits and after just a week, two decided they couldn't handle the stress of the job.
The hope is with these new changes, the call center will be fully staffed or close to it in the next six months.
