News : Nordia Cites "Excess Capacity" in Decision to Shutter Orillia Facility

#contactcenterworld

Orillia, ON, Canada, Feb, 2020 - Roughly three hundred people are losing their jobs as Nordia Inc. prepares to shutter its Orillia operation.

The company confirmed to Simcoe.com that it would close its call centre operation on Hunter Valley Road at the end of July.

"It's always a difficult decision, and it's a very difficult time for everybody," said Phillip van Leeuwen, vice-president of corporate communications. "Unfortunately, with our needs today, we don't actually need that centre anymore."

The operation is housed in a city-owned building that was purpose-built for a call centre.

It was originally occupied and leased by TeleTech, which started there in 2002.

Nordia Inc. in 2013 announced it had purchased the assets and lease of the Orillia call centre following mass layoffs by TeleTech, which for some time continued to use part of the facility to service existing customers.

According to van Leeuwen, Nordia as a company "is doing quite well.

"But it is really just a question for Orillia of changing business needs for us," he said. "We actually find ourselves with excess capacity at almost all our centres."

Orillia's centre "is not at the same level of building quality environment," van Leeuwen said, adding that Nordia offers "really, really world class working environments.

"For us to renovate it would be quite expensive," he said, noting that Nordia's lease was expiring.

The company employed an average of 350 staff at the local facility, with slightly less than 300 currently working there.

The impending closure "does not reflect at all on the quality of work of the employees.

"We have a great team there, a very dedicated and loyal team," van Leeuwen said.

Nordia said it announced the decision now to allow employees time to prepare for the closure.

"I'm hoping that some of those employees will get great jobs elsewhere within the community," van Leeuwen added.

The company will offer staff the opportunity to apply for positions at other centres.

"The only thing, of course, is they are quite a distance away, so I can't see anyone commuting on a daily basis," van Leeuwen said.
