News : Number of Nuisance Cold Calls Slumps after Crackdown
May 28, 2014 -- The number of nuisance calls about claims for mis-sold loan insurance has slumped over the past year, the regulator Ofcom has found.
Fewer than one in eight unsolicited calls are now about payment protection insurance — it used to be more than one in five.
The drop is thought to be down to claims company closures and tighter regulation by the Ministry of Justice.
However, it remains the most common type of unwanted call. Calls about insulation, solar panels and other home improvements are on the rise.
The type of calls made most was live marketing calls (38 per cent), followed by silent calls — where a call centre dials without a staff member available (37 per cent) — and recorded sales calls (12 per cent).
In particular, Ofcom said, it was pursuing a number of firms suspected of making silent and abandoned calls.
Claudio Pollack, Ofcom’s consumer group director, said: ‘While progress is being made, we are under no illusions there is still more work to do.’
The regulator has also published new guides to help consumers prevent nuisance calls.These can be found by searching for ‘nuisance calls’ on the website.
