News : Grand Opening for StarTek Call Center in Carolina Forest
Carolina Forest, SC, Sept 17, 2014 -- A ribbon cutting for StarTek, which is bringing more than 600 jobs to a new call center off International Drive, is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 13.
Horry County chairman Mark Lazarus made the announcement during today’s meeting of the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corp., which brokered the deal with StarTek.
Gov. Nikki Haley is expected to attend the ribbon cutting, Lazarus said.
Morgan Dendy, spokeswoman for the EDC, said she’s working to finalize the Oct. 13 date with StarTek officials.
"The latest from what I’ve gotten from [StarTek] is that their leadership team is meeting this week and will put together an agenda and get back to us regarding the event," Dendy said.
StarTek is contractually obligated to create 670 jobs at the call center that’s located behind Lowes Foods in Carolina Forest.
As of July, the Colorado-based company had hired 186 employees who are temporarily working out Horry-Georgetown Technical College’s Grand Strand campus, according to an EDC report.
About 120 of the new positions will be staffed by local employees, the report said.
The firm has an incentive to ramp up hiring. According to StarTek's contract with Horry County, the company receives $375,000 when the building is finished and 200 workers are hired. It will receive another $375,000 when 400 workers have been hired.
