News : One Complaint Every 22 Minutes on Women’s Helpline in MP
Bhopal, India, Jan 20, 2016 -- The Madhya Pradesh women helpline 1090 received one complaint every 22 minutes and 67 every day last year and majority of them related to sexual harassment and threat to women on mobile phones, according to police figures.
As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report-2015, Madhya Pradesh stands fourth on the list of top five least safe states for women in the country. The state tops the list of sexual offences against women under the Indian Penal Code.
The 1090 helpline service, which was started for women complaints across the state, received 24,467 complaints in 2015 in comparison to 23,340 in 2014. In 2013, as many as 14962 complaints were received out of which FIRs were registered in 500 cases.
The data suggest that the number of complaints from women regarding sexual harassment or victimization in some form or the other is increasing every year even after December 16 Delhi gang rape and police’s stepped-up vigil.
Out of 24,467 complaints, 9,898 registered by the helpline were related to threats on mobile phones. About 3,395 complaints related to violence against women. In the same year, 2,540 complaints of domestic violence, 1,654 of eve teasing, 148 complaints of rape and nearly 989 complaints of harassment were received by 1090 helpline service.
The police officials of 1090 state women helpline claim they always remain on their toes in addressing any complaint received from a victim from any corner of the state. But unfortunately most of the complainants on a later stage drags their feet back when asked to lodge a complaint against the accused in the police station concerned.
"In 2015, out of total 24,467 complaints received by us, cases were registered in only 836 cases against 876 registered cases out of total 23,340 complaints in 2014. It has been because hesitant victims preferred compromise more than lodging cases against the accused", said Sunita Cornelious, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), 1090 women helpline. She said family pressure and fear of legal complexities were the major reason behind victims’ hesitation. Besides this, she said, "About 20% of the total complaints are found false after investigation. In such cases we warn the complainant as they end up wasting our time, " she explained.
