News : Phone Fraud Tops Complaints at Dubai Police Call Centre
Jan 6, 2014 -- Phone fraud topped the list of complaints received by the Dubai Police’s non-emergency call centre, which received 558 calls during the first five months of 2013.
Despite repeated warnings by the police to not respond to callers claiming that the subscriber had won a cash prize, this fraud topped the phone fraud complaints in 2013.
One victim transferred as much as Dh30,000 after he responded to the call, the police said.
Giving further details of this case, Mariam Ali, an official from the information centre at 901, said the victim was contacted by a conman, who claimed that he had won a cash prize of Dh1 million. He was instructed to transfer phone credit worth Dh1,000 initially to claim the prize. By the time he realised he was conned, he had transferred Dh30,000.
After he contacted the police, he expressed regret at his action, saying that he had acted in a naive manner and should have known better.
Muniera Ahmed Al Marzouqi, head of information centre at 901, said in 2012, calls reporting phone fraud touched 5,107.
She said the conmen used religious and other holidays to make these kind of calls.
In one case, one complainant was told that she had won Dh1 million on the occasion of the UAE National Day. When she called the call centre, she was advised not to respond to the call.
