News : Pioneer of Fake Call Centres Held in Ahmedabad
Thane, India, Sept, 2017 -- The Thane city police arrested a 35-year-old resident of Ahmedabad, who is believed to be the pioneer of the fake call centre case, from his plush home in Ahmedabad.
Investigators were looking for Brijesh Patel since a long time after his identity was revealed by the arrested accused.
Patel reportedly mentored Jagdish Kanani, owner of the call centre based in Borivli, who was arrested last year by the police.
Kanani in turn taught the duping skills to Sagar Thakkar alias Shaggy, who ran a flourishing racket from the Mira Road call centre and had a base in Ahmedabad as well.
The fraudsters trained youngsters to speak English with an American accent to make random calls to US citizens and posing as officials of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Indian equivalent of Income Tax, and threaten them of raids until they paid up through wire transfers or purchase of iTunes cards, which would in turn be redeemed by them.
"Patel would convert the iTunes cards into cash through a complicated process, which is being probed. We have found hawala transactions receipts of Rs 38 lakh made through the Angadiya services. The cash receipts have been recovered," said an official probing the case.
He said the crime branch reached Patel's Ahmedabad house based on an accurate tip-off and found him hiding in the bathroom. He has been brought to Thane to face trial.
It is learnt that Patel and Kanani were working in call centres almost a decade ago in Ahmedabad.
"During the initial stage of his career, Kanani dealt with telephone callers based in Ahmedabad and knew that he made calls to US consumers using deceptive statements and threats to convince them to pay debts. It is then that the idea of setting up fake call centres struck them," said a police officer.
