News : Plainville Upgrading 911 Call Center
Plainville, MA, Dec 2, 2014 -- A key part of the town's aging emergency dispatch system is being upgraded, along with video/audio devices used in the police station detention and booking areas.
A town council vote late Monday approved the purchase of workstation, computer terminals, data servers, printers and other hardware needed to use new dispatch computer software bought earlier this year with a state grant.
Town Manager Robert Lee said Tuesday that the new hardware and software will remake the town's computer-aided dispatch system and records-management system. The first system logs all 911 activity, matches phone numbers to addresses, tracks dispatch times and creates a record of each call. The second allows quick retrieval of all police records in digital form.
"Our current CAD system is still working well, but its is old and replacement parts are no longer made, so keeping it in service is a challenge," Lee said. "This upgrade will ensure we stay are up and running."

In a Nov. 24 note to Lee, Police Chief Matthew Catania said the equipment is being purchased via a state bid. It includes moving all the data on the current, aging system to the new devices, creating a backup storage site for the digital records and buying antivirus and security programs for all the records.
The new dispatch equipment is necessary because " technology is running way from our system," Catania told the council in April when the software grant was received. He said the anticipated upgrades should extend the life of the dispatch center by at least a decade.
