News : Plans Emerge to Close Pori Emergency Response Centre
Sept 11, 2014 -- Details of a plan to close down a local emergency response call centre in Pori, southwest Finland, have emerged.
According to information obtained by Yle, four members of the management board of Pori’s emergency control centre have been preparing a proposal to relocate the call centre to either Kerava or Hämeenlinna in southern Finland. The Interior Ministry and Pori town council are said to both be aware of the plans.
An analysis has already been carried out comparing the two replacement locations. However, Pori town officials are reported to have found fault with some of the conclusions.
"I cannot see any reason why this facility should be moved away from here," the deputy leader of the council, Kari Hannus, said.
Officials at Pori municipality have submitted their own account of the operations of the centre to the Interior Minister, Päivi Räsänen. Räsänen will herself visit the department in the near future.
Workers at the centre have expressed "confusion" over the plans. The response centre currently employs 38 people of whom 34 live locally with their families.
