News : Police Toll-free Helpline Gets Overwhelming Response from People
Kanpur, India, April 23, 2015 -- Around 600 calls and whatsap messages are received every day from nine districts! The toll-free number `Ek number bharosey ka' (a number to trust on) 0512-2310512 is flooded with voice calls and whatsap messages from natives of nine districts coming under the police of Kanpur zone.
The toll-free number, announced by IG Ashutosh Pandey for emergency and non-emergency complaints, received more than 3,472 voice calls and whatsap messages until late Tuesday night. The number (0512-2310512) launched by the IG on April 16, received 1,457 voice calls and 2,015 Whatsap messages from Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Kannauj, Fatehgarh, Etawah, Auraiya, Jalaun, Jhansi and Lalitpur districts till late Tuesday night.
Also, to ensure prompt action, a mobile number-7704020202, has also been issued to register complaints via SMS or audio or video messages or through WhatsApp. At present, the cell of `Ek number bharosey ka' has four sub-inspectors and six constables, but going by the response, they are inadequate and more sleuths would be deputed to it, the IG said. "The frequency of calls and messages to the toll-free has increased drastically ever since it was launched on April 16," admitted a sub-inspector, working in the cell.
Another senior police official, who has been supervising the 24X7 toll-free number, said: "The callers, who had been denied police help at any level, have appreciated the initiative. In some cases, we have to console them and give a little emotional support." Announcing the number on April 16, IG had asked the people to register their emergency as well as non-emergency complaints on it.
"Have a garbage dumping problem in your locality or a problem with an unleashed dog? We'll resolve it", said IG. Cops at the toll-free number control room at the IG office are manning a 24-hour-helpline to answer calls of the people of the nine districts, he added. "The response is overwhelming. On the first day itself, we received some 600 voice calls and whatsap messages. We will add more lines so that more people can get access," he further said.
While the cops are trained to patiently listen to complaints related with crime and general grievances, they have also been asked to hear other problems as well. "The people are calling at the toll-free number because they feel that they will be heard. For instance, a priest from Konch area of Jalaun district called saying that some rowdy elements are dumping garbage near a temple. Another caller complained that someone's dog is posing problem by answering the nature's call in front of his house. We never turn them down. We refer them to the appropriate authority or try to resolve their problems immediately," said a police official at the toll-free number cell.
The tol-free number received as many as 3,472 complaints between April 16 and April 21. Of these, most of the complaints were registered from Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Auraiya and Kannauj.

Initially, two toll-free numbers--one landline number and a mobile phone number--were launched for 176 police stations across Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Kannauj, Fatehgarh, Etawah, Auraiya, Jalaun, Jhansi and Lalitpur districts coming under the zonal police. For this toll-free helpline, the SHO's of all the police stations have been provided with special application 'Kanpur Police App' on their mobiles.
The complainant is required to mention his/her name, address and the police station while registering the complaint. The concerned police officer, after receiving the complaint, would issue a 6 digit code to check the status of the complaint.
The problem registered with this helpline will be solved within 24 hours of its registration, the IG claimed. "If it remains unresolved, it would then further be diverted to the Circle Officer, for the necessary action," he further said.
