News : Project to Link 5,000 Villages
April 8, 2014 -- The Sultanate’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in cooperation with Omantel and Nawras has launched a national project called Telecom Zone for providing basic telecom services to the 5,000 villages in remote and rural areas of the country, according to Majid K Al Balushi of TRA.
He was speaking to the Observer at the 24th edition of Comex, which opened yesterday under the auspices of Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh al Mantheri, Chairman of the State Council. Telecom Zone consists of four parts. Initially the project involves the establishment of 200 telecom sites to cover 250 villages which have no connections as of now.
The project started last year and this year Omantel and Nawras are expected to complete 100 sites each to cover many villages. Ultimately the project will cover 5,000 villages to give them mobile and Internet services, including voice and SMS.
The project will also cater to the needs of deaf people in their dealings with banks and ministries. TRA in cooperation with Cisco, provide a device to these people to connect to the TRA call centre through sign language over the video and the call centre will communicate to the bank or the ministry concerned on their behalf.
