Singapore, July, 2019 -- Members of the public have been warned of a ruse whereby a scammer spoofed a call from an Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) number.
A member of the public had received a call from the ICA’s Call Centre number "6391 6100" on Tuesday from a scammer claiming to be an ICA officer, the agency said in an advisory on Friday (28 June).
The scammer had asked questions about the victim’s background and residence status for verification purposes.
He subsequently threatened to deport her back to her country of origin or be taken into custody, unless she paid a "security deposit" in the form of an Apple iTunes card.
The victim would then have to provide the card activation number, the ICA added.
"The ICA does not call members of the public to request money in any form over the phone," it said.
Members of the public who receive such calls have been advised to ignore the calls and the caller’s instructions as well as avoid providing personal information.
Scammers may also use caller ID spoofing technology to mask the actual phone number and display a different number that may not actually be made from Singapore, said the ICA.
"If you receive a suspicious call from a local number, hang up, wait a while, then call the number back to check the validity of the request," it added.
