News : Rise in Calls to Teen Helpline
Dublin, Ireland, Jan 19, 2016 -- Loneliness led to many of the 24,000 calls to a listening service for teenagers last year. It received 5,000 more calls than 2014.
Teenline also received 8,000 text messges.
Chairperson Declan Brennan said: "There were three times the number of female callers to male callers. The most common reason for a younger person to contact the helpline was simply to talk to someone."
The second most common reason to call was to chat. The remaining reasons for callers was due to loneliness and relationship issues. The highest number of calls were received in April and December. The text line received over 200 text messages alone on December 23. This was the highest day for text messages during the Christmas period. You can contact the helpline on 1800 833 634.
