News : Riverview Call Centre Closure Causes Uncertainty for 250 Workers
Riverview, New Brunswick, Canada, Aug 27, 2015 -- The closure of a Riverview call centre is causing some uncertainty for roughly 250 employees.
Sykes Enterprises Inc. acquired a Riverview call centre from ICT in 2010 and is planning to close the call centre by Dec. 31.
Employees at Sykes will be given layoff notices but many will then be offered work with Nordia, another call centre in Moncton.
Both Nordia and Sykes have contracts with Bell Aliant.
Philip van Leeuwen, the director of communications at Nordia, said the company is ready to take on the additional work with Bell Aliant.
"We have been approached to take on some business for Bell Aliant that currently is being done in the Riverview centre at Sykes. So that's something very we're very happy to do and we can accommodate those employees," van Leeuwen said.
One employee spoke to CBC News and said the change means uncertainty.
Opportunities New Brunswick said a forgivable loan was provided to ICT, which was acquired by Sykes, in 2008.
The provincial government provided a forgivable loan for each of the jobs created in New Brunswick. The loan has been forgiven because conditions were met.
The Sykes closure comes on the heels of the closure of another call centre, in Bathurst, which will put up to 70 people out of work in the northern city.
