News : RLCB Shifting to More Call-center, Specialty Work for Blind Workforce
Feb 11, 2014 -- RLCB Inc., formerly the Raleigh Lions Clinic for the Blind, hasn’t abandoned its mission to provide jobs and job training for visually impaired workers in the Triangle, but the nonprofit agency is shifting its focus and moving its headquarters, says President and CEO Janet Griffey.
Griffey confirms that RLCB will be transferring about 130 workers to a new sewing, knitting and textile operation that one of RLCB’s sister companies from Maryland will be opening soon in Raleigh.
Blind Industries and Services of Maryland has bought a warehouse building on Atlantic Avenue in Raleigh, where it will be transferring from RLCB all of the sewing, knitting and textile work that RLCB has been fulfilling under contract with the federal government.
In turn, RLCB will keeping about 100 of its people working on non-textile product assembly contracts, as well as at its technology lab center and its customer call centers in Raleigh and military bases in Kentucky, Louisiana, Alaska and Mississippi.
"We’re getting out of the sewn products business," Griffey says, "(Blind Industries) is a very good agency, and they have expertise in sewn products. Those individuals will still have secure employment. We wanted to keep those jobs in the Raleigh area. That was important to myself and the board."
RLCB will also be relocating from its 130,000-square-foot warehouse and office space on Bush Street in Raleigh to a 48,000-square-foot flex building at 2701 Noblin Dr. in Raleigh.
Its lease at the Bush Street building expires June 30.
