News : South Africa Popular Destination for Business Services
Cape Town, South Africa, May 30, 2016 -- SA’s thriving call centre and process management industry contributed R50bn for the 2014-15 financial year to the country’s GDP, and there is scope for more.
In the Western Cape, WNS, a global business process management company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, Capita, Merchants, Mindpearl, Teleperformance, Serco, Webhelp — as well as international brands such as Asda, Amazon and 02 — are among a growing number of firms using SA as a business process destination for their operations.
Business process outsourcing, which encompasses call centres, involves a company contracting specific functions, such as customer relations, to a third party, often in another country.
The UK is SA’s main source of such foreign outsourcing activity.
The government has prioritised the industry for support because of its potential to create jobs.
Companies servicing foreign markets can apply to access incentives provided by the Department of Trade and Industry on condition they meet strict black economic empowerment and other criteria.
Johann Kunz, MD of WNS SA, said the country had established itself as a global destination for quality business process services. This was evident in the addition of complex back-office processes, which have started to move SA further up the value chain.
The local industry has evolved from call centre services to offer finance and accounting services, human resource services, analytics and even legal process services.
SA’s infrastructure, readily available skills and talent, government incentives and a favourable exchange rate appealed to international businesses. A mature domestic financial services market, which employs more than 200,000 people in back-office roles, has been a key driver in this shift.
SA also had a high-quality tertiary education system that helped to create a sustainable talent pipeline in areas such as law, finance and IT, Kunz said.
