News : SaskEnergy Telemarketing Scam Circulating in Sask.
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, Aug 28, 2015 -- If someone calls claiming to be from SaskEnergy, but asks for payment information, that's a big red flag.
"We would never, ever phone a customer and ask for a bank account or credit card information over the phone or anything like that," said Casey MacLeod, senior communications officer with SaskEnergy. "That would definitely be considered a scam phone call."
Currently, businesses in the Moose Jaw and Saskatoon areas are being targeted by a telemarketing scam. Individuals claiming to be from SaskEnergy have been calling customers and threatened to disconnect natural gas if a payment isn't made immediately. Callers are telling customers to provide credit card information.
"Over the last couple days we've had a few phone calls from customers call into our customer service line to double check that this is us or this isn't us and also to complain that they were approached by someone," said MacLeod.
"We do any encourage any customers if they think anything is suspicious to call our customer service line and we can verify whether the person they've been in contact with is actually from SaskEnergy."
SaskEnergy has reports of two callback numbers associated with the scam - 1-800-930-6079 and 1-306-992-0681. MacLeod said the callers have typically requested a call back within 45 minutes or an hour with payment information.
"So far, they've been commercial businesses. In one instance, a person actually walked into the business claiming to be from SaskEnergy and asking for payment of a bill," she said.
"Again, this is something we would never do. We might have to go to a business to deal with service issues for a customer, but we would never send someone to collect payment in person."
MacLeod added raising awareness about the scam is the best way to make sure no one falls for it.
"This is something that does crop up a few times a year, not just for us, but other utilities as well," she said. "They evolve a little bit each time, trying to take a different approach."
If someone picks up a call from someone claiming to be from SaskEnergy and the caller asks for payment information, get a call back number. Then call SaskEnergy's customer service line to verify the legitimacy of the call. SaskEnergy's customer service line is 1-800-567-8899.
Also, anyone who has received a call as described in the scam should report the call to Phonebusters, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Call Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
If someone shows up in person to collect payment, call the local police.
