News : Shaw Hiring 400 for New Call Centre in Winnipeg
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Aug 26, 2015 -- Shaw Communications is looking to hire another 400 workers over the next six months for its new Winnipeg customer-care centre in southwest Winnipeg.
The Calgary-based media provider ran a newspaper advertisement earlier this week urging job-seekers to apply for the positions.
The new hires are among a total of 581 employees the Calgary-based media giant hopes to have working at the new Fultz Boulevard facility by the end of February.
"We've been actively recruiting since last February, so it's about a 12-month recruitment cycle we're in," Sarah Miller Wright, Shaw's vice-president of customer care, said in an interview Tuesday.
She said the 581 new employees will include 528 front-line workers and 53 management/supervisory personnel.
Miller Wright said workers began moving into the 90,000-square-foot facility at the beginning of June. Once fully operational, the new centre will be more than double the size of the company's Scurfield Boulevard facility, which will continue to house some customer-care staff as well as the bulk of the company's other local operations.
Shaw currently has about 1,300 employees in Winnipeg. It moved into the Fultz Boulevard facility as part of an earlier-announced plan to close its customer-care centres in Calgary and Edmonton, downsize its Kelowna centre, and consolidate everything in four new "centres of expertise" in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Victoria and Montreal.
About 1,600 affected workers were given the option of transferring to one of the four new expanded centres. Miller Wright said so far, about 140 have agreed to relocate. But she couldn't say how many are coming to Winnipeg because the Calgary centre won't be closing until January.
"So it's still a work in progress. We still have people actively signing up... so that number is a moving target right now."
She said the employees who have already accepted a transfer run the gamut, from front-line workers to senior managers.
Miller Wright noted the new Winnipeg customer-care centre's prime areas of expertise will be technical support, billing, technical-service delivery and outbound customer solutions.
