News : ‘SOS’ Systems on Buses Soon
Bangalore, India, April 3, 2018 -- To make public transport safer for women, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is thinking of setting up Save Our Soul (SOS) systems on its buses under the Nirbhaya fund.
‘SOS’ is an international code signal for extreme distress and an urgent appeal for help. As soon as woman commuter gets into the bus, she has to enter a code number in her mobile phone and the call centre of BMTC will receive a message. The woman can also drop a message to the call centre in case of an emergency. The system will help the officials establish contact with the buses and passengers in need.

V Ponnuraj, Managing Director, BMTC, confirmed that the corporation is planning to install SOS systems on its buses but said that the decision on number of buses that will have this feature is yet to be taken. Technology has to be developed for it, Ponnuraj said.
According to BMTC sources, Series 5 Labs has submitted its proposal to the corporation for providing cashless or app-based ticketing system for BMTC commuters. It is also committed to provide a passengers counting system on its buses and has also sought permission to install such system in 20 buses for six days on a pilot basis. Besides, Series 5 Labs will also provide Wi-Fi facility on buses. BMTC has fixed a monthly fee of Rs 251 each for KPIT company which is providing Wi-Fi facility on its 200 Volvo buses.
"The Corporation is planning to install passengers counting system but it is long way to go. It takes minimum one-and-half or two years to set up such applications on buses", he added.
