News : StarTek Increases Wages and Hires More Employees
Kingston, ON, Canada, March 1, 2016 -- One of Kingston’s private sector employers is on a hiring spree. StarTek wants to fill more than 200 new positions. And it’s going to offer new and current employees a substantial raise. As Newswatch’s Jonna Semple explains, StarTek’s announcement could mean more opportunity for employees … And more money invested into the local economy.
"We’ve increased our starting rate from 12 dollars to 14 dollars an hour and after 6 months that will increase to $14.50, so another 50 cents on top of that."
The call centre, which opened in Kingston 15 years ago, currently provides call in customer service for telecom company, T-Mobile. As the American cell phone company grows, it is investing more money into StarTek, enabling wage increases and the creation of about 200 more jobs.

Program Director at Keys Job Centre Gillian Watters says StarTek’s wage increase will not only attract more people to the company, but allow individuals to stay in the job long term.

"I’d like to think that StarTek might be starting a trend with some of our other employers in Kingston who might be looking at their wages and their benefit packages and trying to retain the employees that they currently have or offer more attractive packages for people coming in the door so that they will stay and grow their business."
StarTek will be hiring on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
