News : State to Have One Number for Emergency Calls Soon
Surat, India, Dec 6, 2016 -- Gujarat will soon have a central control room similar to 108 EMRI ambulance service where a caller can dial for help in time of emergency. Currently, a caller can connect to city-wise control rooms on 100 number by prefixing a particular place's STD code.
"State police are developing control rooms to address emergency calls and they will be similar to the existing 108 service. We may outsource the call centre services for better results," Pruthvi Pal Pandey, director general of police, Gujarat told TOI here on Monday.
"Currently, we have several control rooms in different cities and districts. But we want to develop a call centre through which the police can be approached by victims by dialling just one number," added Pandey, who was on a day's visit to the city to launch social media platforms of inspector general of police, Surat range.

"With changing times, social media has become an integral part of police operations. Major discussions are taking place through the chat platform available on mobile phones," he added.
"I have been sharing information, circulars and orders with senior police officers of the state through WhatsApp. It helps in disseminating information quickly and accurately. The officers concerned can check the information within seconds with the help of their mobile phones. We also promote good work of the cops through social media," said Pandey.
During his visit to Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Pandey suggested to the university officials to start courses on police science. "A few states in North India teach subjects related to the armed forces and we can very well have courses on police in Gujarat. These courses will help young citizens understand the functioning of police better and also know their rights," he added.
Pandey asked cops in the state to do cashless transaction and promote this concept in the society. The police department will be launching an awareness drive to educate their staffers about it soon.
