News : State to Set Up Helpline for Children Soon
Guwahati, India, Feb 23, 2016 -- The state government will soon open an exclusive helpline to protect children from exploitation, said chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday.
Besides rescuing children from human traffickers and racketeers, the helpline will provide a mechanism to check such crimes at the outset. Unless people stand up, children from poor and backward families would continue to suffer, Gogoi said.
The helpline will function in all districts and subdivisions of the state. Once it is functional, a 24X7 call centre will be set up to attend to any emergency calls and alert authorities.
At present, the state unit of Childline provides similar help to children in need. Since 2001, Childline (Guwahati) has intervened in as many as 6,115 cases.
Recently, Gogoi flagged off the Mukti Caravan, a campaign-on-wheels against child trafficking spearheaded by Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) in association with Kailash Satyarthi Children's Foundation.
As part of the campaign, a group of youngsters will cover 10 districts of the state and spread awareness among communities, villages and towns vulnerable to human trafficking. They will sensitise people through street plays, folk songs infused with social messages, pamphlets, wall writings, pledge signings and awareness campaigns on child exploitation. Former victims of trafficking and bonded labour will also participate in the campaign and sensitise people about trafficking and related exploitation.
