Regina, SK, Canada, Oct, 2019 -- Hundreds of striking Crown sector workers have formed a perimeter around the SaskTel call centre on Henderson Drive in Regina, and are blocking managers from entering.
On Monday morning, Unifor organizers said the same action is taking place at a Saskatoon call centre in an attempt to shut down services that managers have been performing while unionized workers strike.
"Call centre’s closed! Call centre’s closed!" the workers chanted after managers arrived.
The managers reached the site in a Regina industrial area around 6 a.m. About 20 were assembled at 6:45 a.m., at which point they vacated the perimeter to discuss their next steps on a nearby lot. They returned but were again blocked by Unifor members.
A couple of managers were able to to breach the perimeter at various times during the early morning. Unifor’s assistant to the national president, Chris MacDonald, interceded and persuaded them to turn back.
He threatened to post one manager’s picture on the Unifor Canada Facebook page.
"Please respect these people," he said. "By the end of the day, if you go in there we will put your picture all over for everyone to see."
The manager eventually turned back.
But picketers mainly dissuaded managers by locking arms and shouting with loud booming voices.
