News : StubHub Begins Transitioning from East Granby to Salt Lake City
East Granby, CT, USA, Dec, 2017 -- StubHub began the process of closing its East Granby call center and moving its activities out of state.
The decision affects nearly 200 Connecticut workers, according to the state Department of Labor.
"Some of the East Granby folks work there, but it's a regional employer so a lot of folks from all over that travel to that building," East Granby First Selectman James Hayden said.
StubHub is a multi-national company with offices around the world and is currently owned by eBay.
"As announced earlier this year, StubHub made a strategic business decision to move its Center of Excellence for Customer Experience and Trust Operations from East Granby to Salt Lake City. Today, we began the transition process that will continue over the next several months as we prepare for the relocation. During this time, the East Granby office will remain open until the Spring of 2018. We thank each and every StubHub representative, as well as the East Granby community, for their support over the last 12 years as our North American customer service hub," StubHub said in a statement to Channel 3 on Friday afternoon."
The company announced several months ago that it was going to close its Connecticut office starting on Dec. 1 and begin moving jobs to Salt Lake City, UT. However, it is not clear why it made the move or whether or not tax incentives were involved.
"Sometime in early 2018, they'll be completely phased out," Hayden said.
Channel 3 asked if any of the affected employees at StubHub were given opportunities to keep their jobs and move to Utah. As of Friday afternoon, the company has not responded to Channel 3's questions.
The transition process started on Friday, but StubHub will still operate locally until spring of next year.
"They've been phasing out by not replacing people and things like that," Hayden said. "But at this point, December is a crucial month."
With hundreds of employees entering town each day, other businesses, such as the Hopin Mart Smoke Shop said they're affected by the departure too.
"We will definitely lose some customers," Naushen Naquvi, who owns the Hopin Mart Smoke Shop, said.
This comes as the business climate continues to drastically change in Connecticut.
Notable companies like Konica Minolta in Windsor recently announced it is moving jobs to New Jersey and Bristol-based ESPN laid off hundreds of people as well in the last several years.
"We wouldn't appreciate it," Naquvi said. "We feel bad for them."
