News : Suicide-related Calls Made to Helpline Up by 260%
Rapid City, SD, April 16, 2015 -- One statistic was shocking enough to stand out.
The number of suicide–related calls made to the Helpline Center was up by a whopping 260 percent.
That's roughly 380 calls per year made to the hotline, rather than the 146 they received in the previous year.
Heidi Belle Gease with Helpline Center says, "The good thing about it is that the vast majority of the calls are for people who are calling early on with having thoughts of suicide, before the situation has escalated farther. So that's kind of the silver lining I guess."
Helpline Center, an information hotline, puts together the report each year based on a compilation of all calls received by the hotline.
