News : Suspended Firstsource Staff Back at Work
Derry, N. Ireland, UK, Feb 10, 2015 -- The majority of workers at Derry call centre Firstsource who had been controversially suspended, have now returned to work at the company, the Journal has learned.
Liam Gallagher, Secretary of the Derry Trades Council which had been working with those affected, said he welcomed the news that workers had been allowed to continue with their jobs, but said First Source now needed to tell the public exactly what had caused the suspensions.
A Firstsource spokesperson would only say yesterday that investigations were ongoing but confirmed that the majority of employees affected had "returned to the workplace."
Mr. Gallagher told the Journal: "We understand that the company are continuing to investigate, but nobody has come out and told the public what caused this. Firstsource is a major employer in the city and people deserve an explanation as to why workers were left not knowing what their futures might hold.

"There are wider implications because there are so many workers without union protection in the city. The Communications Workers’ Union will lead the campaign regarding Firstsource from now on but our message to workers right across the city is a simple one and that is they should join a union.
"Being in a union offers some level of protection and we’re in a situation now where Derry is being marketed as a place which offers this kind of low scale unemployment so it’s more important than ever that workers stand together and in doing so stand strong."
