News : Talk Talk Warns of Bogus Callers
Nov 4, 2014 -- Resident are being warned about fraudsters phoning the UK from abroad posing to be from Talk Talk, after an Eastbourne man was targeted.
The local, who doesn’t want to be named, told the Gazette he had a call from a woman who sounded as if she was in a call centre in India.
He said, "I know that Talk Talk use call centres in India so I didn’t think that much of it."
The woman told him there was a fault with his internet line and multiple corrupt files were being downloaded on to his computer. She directed him to a website while she was on the telephone and then gained remote access to his computer. The woman then told the Eastbourne resident to visit another website for a £170 refund, where he was asked to input his bank account details.
He said, "I thought this was getting weirder and weirder, so I told her I wasn’t going to give out my details and explained I was going to terminate the call and phone Talk Talk myself."
The woman then gave him a number to call back on. The man searched online for the number and realised it had nothing to do with his telephone and internet provider. He called Talk Talk and they confirmed it was a scam.
The man said the whole thing, including the way the websites were designed, was ‘very plausible’ and he wants to warn others.
A spokesperson from Talk Talk said, "TalkTalk will never call customers and ask for access their computers, or ask for banking details in this way. Any customer who has received a call from somebody pretending to be from TalkTalk is asked to contact us.
