News : TASC Hotline for Legal Help Available
Toowoomba, Queensland, August 14, 2014 -- People at risk of falling through the legal system's cracks now have a number to call for help.
Toowoomba legal aid service The Advocacy and Support Centre has launched a hotline to give advice on family and civil law matters to disadvantaged people.
The Toowoomba Community Legal Service Hotline runs five days a week and a solicitor is on hand to provide advice and referrals.
TASC solicitor Hayley Toombs said legal matters were often highly intimidating for people unfamiliar with the system.
"The law is a difficult thing for a layman to understand - at times it's difficult for us lawyers. We have to get the books out and weave our way through the magic web of legal jargon.
"(The hotline) deals with both complex and non-complex matters.
"It may just be a simple question as to what does this question mean on a divorce application, or as complex as I've been served papers from the Magistrates Court, or correspondence from another solicitor about my children.
"It's giving that initial advice and referrals to individuals who are really needing that assistance."
The hotline operates from 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday, and 9am to 4pm, on Friday.
