News : Telstra Takes Cloud to US for Global Coverage
June 18, 2014 -- Telstra has ramped up its push into the global IT services market with the opening of a Telstra cloud hub on the US east coast.
It completes Telstra's global network of cloud hubs and is the latest move in the telco's bid to lift the revenue it generates offshore.
Nathan Bell, Telstra Global's director of marketing, products and pricing, told IT Pro the new hub enabled the company to offer truly global cloud services for the first time. Telstra Global is headquartered in Hong Kong.
"We are now finally able to visualise for our customers what global really means. Now we have a cloud hub in the US, one in Europe, one in north Asia, one in south Asia and one in Australia."
All Telstra's cloud hubs will use the in-house developed cloud platform, CSX, based on Cisco servers, VMware virtualisation technology and EMC storage and will serve as platforms for both infrastructure-as-a-service offerings to enterprise customers and for a range of current and planned services that use software running in the cloud.
Bell said CSX was core to a strategy of delivering an increasing range of cloud services that were identical wherever in the world they were offered.
"Our [Cisco] unified comms platform which we are about to roll out, sits on top of those cloud hubs. Our [IPscape-based] virtual contact centre sits on those cloud hubs. Everything we do sits on those cloud hubs … It is now easy for us and for our customers to replicate those services in any part of the world."
The CSX platform is intended to support public, private and cloud services because, according to Bell, all three models are increasingly demanded by enterprises.
"No business process today is IT-only or communications-only, all are increasingly blended. So we see that hybrid is going to play a bigger and bigger role going forward," he said.
He added that a string of recent investments by Telstra reflected its new focus on delivering cloud-based services.
"If you look at the companies Telstra has been investing in: IPscape, Box, Ooyala, Mendoe, these are all cloud-based companies and if you know that you can drop [their software] onto your cloud architecture anywhere in the world you have just simplified your whole delivery model."
"We will be working with Cisco globally as part of their Intercloud community but we recognised that with everything else we are doing we needed the consistency of a cloud platform we can deliver to our customers for their IT needs, but more importantly [use as] a platform for all their other services."
